Holiday Skate at UPenn

Elishia Peterson, St. Joseph’s ’13

Tis the season to be skating! That’s right it’s that time of year again so lace up, grab your friends and hit the ice. The University of Pennsylvania’s Penn Ice Rink is hosting skating events for the holiday and tying in a way for the community to give back. Naturally you can skate there on other occasions as well but what makes this special is the “helping someone else” aspect.

On Saturday, November 19th and Sunday, November 20th the over 40 year old rink was open to the public for its Thanksgiving Skate. Students from the campus and other locals were given the chance to glide across the frozen ground and have a good time. Admission was FREE to the public by simply bringing a non-perishable food item(s) and paying just $3 for ice skates. Penn has been doing these special events for many years. All donations received will go directly to the Philadelphia Food Bank.

Coming up on Saturday, December 17th and Sunday, December 18th the rink hosts their Holiday Skate. Once again, free admission with the $3 skate rental, only this time you must bring a toy, donations will be given to Toys for Tots. Cherie Terakura, the Programs Director at the Penn Ice Rink informed me that, “We have noticed that doing events like this not only helps those that receive the donations, but also we have noticed a lot of underprivileged kids in the city that come to these events so that they can skate for free.”

What better way to spread some holiday cheer than to donate, slip on some skates and try your best figure skater move if you can. If you’re like me and do nothing but scream and dramatically fall on the ice, don’t worry, dust off those ice flakes and try again. For these specific events at the rink’s Class of 1923 Arena it’s all about giving and having fun!
