Summer in Philly: Intern Dan’s Picks
Music, food, events, and activities coupled with great weather is a recipe for an amazing summer. Philly has all the components to keep you occupied while you enjoy your well-deserved break.
Starting with music, Philly is no slouch when it comes to concerts. The Roots host their eponymous picnic concert every year at the Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing. The lineup this summer for The Roots Picnic is filled with big names such as Pharrell, Solange, and Lil’ Wayne and many more. Keeping up with tradition, Jay-Z’s Made in America concert has quickly become a Philly favorite. Held on the iconic steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Made in America celebrates 4th of July weekend in the birthplace of America. Acts like Rihanna, Chance The Rapper, and Coldplay will be performing amongst many others.
On the outside, the Art Museum serves as the venue for Made in America, but on the inside the Art Museum will continue to feature exhibits throughout the summer. Such as a photographic exhibit – Wild: Michael Nichols, Philadelphia Assembled an exhibit that intertwines art and civic engagement, and Phulkari a collection of embroidered textiles from Punjab. Art deserves its own festival too, thankfully the artful neighborhood that is Manayunk hosts the Manayunk Arts Festival where for two days, hundreds of artists come to sell their own paintings, photography, sculptures, jewelry and more.
Of course, we have to talk about food. Philly is a foodie haven, in the summer we turn it up a notch. The Night Market alone is enough to get you excited, imagine your favorite food trucks on campus, now picture a full block of them, uninterrupted by traffic each serving up their own delicious creations. Everyone gets in on the action, local giant Wawa hosts their Wawa Welcome America Party every year. From June 29th, up until 4th of July. Enjoy music, events, performances and lots and lots of food. Finally, the most notable Philly delicacy: the Philly cheesesteak is getting the fest it deserves. Held at Citizen’s Bank Park, the Cheesesteak & Food Fest offers samples of other local delicacies like hoagies and pretzels, along with games, competitions, and well – cheesesteaks!
Spending time with good people in great weather is an event in itself. Some of my personal favorite outdoor chill spots include: Penn’s Landing, where you get a great view of the Delaware River and Harbor Park an extension of Penn’s Landing which illuminates the pier of Penn’s Landing literally. Hanging light crystals adorn the trees along the walkway, along with hammocks, and food shacks. And my personal favorite- The Art Museum. With a view of the city right down Benjamin Franklin Parkway, the steps of the Art Museum are a prime location for kickin’ back and basking in the great weather.
I can go on forever but enough about my summer in Philly! Let’s make sure you’re here to experience it for yourself. Start your planning with Online Job + Internship Week, March 27-31, and apply to jobs and internships right here in Philadelphia.
