Thursday :: March 27, 2003Syd's Rap The 2003 Academy Awards show was the most entertaining in recent memory. In deference to the current war situation, Oscar organizers announced the ceremony would be "toned down." Gone were the red carpet intros with celebrities basking in obscene displays of conspicuous consumption. Also axed were post-show interviews. Why not just mail the dern things to the winners and be done with it? Some of the winners were surprising, and more than a little controversial. Adrien Brody pulled off a big upset, winning Best Actor, then practically pulled off Halle Berry's lips by kissing her like a deranged fan. I think he planned to win the Oscar just so he could do that. What about the pedophile, Roman Polanski, winning Best Director? I'm curious as to the message the Academy was trying to convey by honoring a child predator and criminal fugitive. Guess Ira Einhorn's rambling manifesto will be up for the Pulitzer next. And Michael Moore, Best Documentary winner for Bowling for Columbine (a spectacular movie), promptly used his international platform to scold President Bush for waging a "fictitious war." Certainly more provocative than the usual, "I'd like to thank my manager and my agent..." The ceremony inspired a bit of a career change for me-I'm going to be an actor. That way, when I win my Oscar I can kiss Halle Berry too! comments? e-mail syd@campusphilly.org
