When Bryn Mawr College opened its doors in 1885, it offered women a more ambitious academic program than any previously available to them in the United States. Other women’s colleges existed, but Bryn Mawr was the first to offer graduate education through the Ph.D.—a signal of its founders’ refusal to accept the limitations imposed on women’s intellectual achievement at other institutions.
Bryn Mawr women compete on 12 NCAA Division III athletic teams: badminton, basketball, crew, cross country, field hockey, indoor track and field, lacrosse, outdoor track and field, soccer, swimming, tennis, volleyball and club varsity rugby.
Students get involved in more than 100 clubs and organizations.
Programs of Study
Bryn Mawr offers 36 majors, 38 minors and eight concentrations in a wide variety of fields. In addition to the many academic options offered at Bryn Mawr, students may also take advantage of one of the most active college partnerships in the nation. Dubbed the “tri-co” by students, Bryn Mawr, Haverford and Swarthmore Colleges form a dynamic relationship that allows students from each community to access resources, such as classes, libraries, dining halls and social events, on all three campuses. Bryn Mawr has a similar agreement with the University of Pennsylvania, 20 minutes from Bryn Mawr via commuter rail.
The college’s Office of Admissions is open year-round, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and select Saturdays. Bryn Mawr welcomes prospective students and their families to campus. Students who wish to know more or schedule a visit may call the office at 610.526.5152 or visit the website.
