Vernon Park Service Trip
April 8, 2017 | 11:00 am – 3:00 pm
Vernon Park | 5804 Greene Street Philadelphia 19144
This spring the Student Leader Network takes our third trip into Germantown as we help Friends of Vernon Park spruce up their grounds and learn about the community from elders at Center in the Park.
Vernon Park is neighborhood treasure that’s part of a citywide network managed by Philadelphia Parks & Recreation. The mission of “Parks & Rec” is to provide residents with facilities that are safe, clean, and ready to use. However, they can’t do it by themselves! We are collaborating with Friends of Vernon Park and Center in the Park to help Germantown residents of all ages enjoy their park, while we learn more about this unique neighborhood through a hands-on experience.
Use SLN as a group activity for your school! Contact Cory Dulaney as soon as possible to reserve space. Then, follow these steps to complete registration:
- Click here to download this Group Registration excel sheet
- Email the completed excel sheet to firstname.lastname@example.org no later than March 24, 2017.
If you are registering as an individual, please click the button below to complete registration.
If your campus is not organizing group transport, we will work with you to reach the neighborhood, meeting up in Center City or on the SEPTA Regional Rail to travel to Vernon Park.
If you should have any more questions, please contact Cory Dulaney at email@example.com
Our service project will lead to better habitat for wildlife and better recreational space for park visitors. We will be cutting down and digging out invasive exotic vegetation, raking leaves, picking up some litter, and performing other general park maintenance. Below are some logistical details for your consideration:
- No special skills or prior experience required. David Bower, former Director of Volunteer Services for Philly Parks & Rec will provide complete orientation, training, and hands-on leadership
- We provide all tools and materials.
- There is free on-site parking.
- Indoor restrooms are on-site
- Wear old clothes, dress in layers, jeans are suggested, closed toed shoes a must.
- Bring your inhaler or epi-pen if you normally use such things
We are a community of connectors from different campuses who take full advantage of being a college student in the Philadelphia region.
Because you already create your own Philadelphia experience, and are eager to learn more and keep sharing with others.

I enjoy Philly because it has the vibrant cultural scene of a locale like New York City at a fraction of the price. One of my favorite things to do while I’m in Center City is check out Opera Philadelphia performances at the Academy of Music. If I want to get artsy, I grab my friends from my poetry workshopping group and head over to the Pigeon Poetry Slam at PhilaMOCA. Both of these make a great solo trip, a good time on the town with friends, or a fun date night location. Beforehand, I like to hit up Han Dynasty for wonderful Chinese cuisine. It has a few locations around Philly including one in University City where I attend college! The best part about Philadelphia is that there’s something here for every interest, so you’ll never feel left out.

Originally I came to Philly for school, but I learned to appreciate the culture and the arts that Center City has to offer too. Now, Philadelphia is a home away from home for me. My favorite things to do are to visit the parks to sit back and relax and maybe read, visit the dog parks, and go to see shows at the Merriam Theatre, Wilma Theatre, or at Suzanne Roberts Philadelphia Theatre Company.

I enjoy going to Philly for the rich history and life that the city has. During baseball season, I love heading down to Citizens Bank Park for a great day of baseball and to cheer on our Phillies. In the summer, my friends and I love seeing our favorite country singers in concert either at Lincoln Financial Field or at one of the many other venues in the city. As a college student, my friends and I like to explore the city by planning new places to visit such as the magic gardens or going out to lunch on a Saturday afternoon.

Philadelphia is more than just Rocky or the Mummers parade, it’s literally the best place on the east coast! What I love about Philly is you can always find something to do. I love to walk around and get a feel of the city after a long day at school. Want a bite to eat but don’t really know what you’re craving? Reading Terminal Market gotcha covered! Endless food choices at an amazing price and sometimes with a show! What’s my favorite part about Philly? It’s impossible because I love everything about this jawn!
