Now that we’re getting down to the dog days of summer, it’s time to immerse yourself in all the activities you wanted to do this summer, but never got around to. To help out with those end-of-summer blues, we’ve compiled a list of fun activities and events to attend around the city every day of the week during your last couple weeks of summer. These deals and events might not be around once the cooler weather hits, so take advantage of them now and end your summer right!
After a long, grueling Monday of work (or sunbathing) head over to World Cafe Live for their monthly Philly Rising Open Mic night. Hosted by Boy Wonder, the open mic performances start at 7 p.m. and admission to see local talent is completely free. The event offers a slew of prizes for each week’s chosen winner, including the chance to record one song with Cambridge Sound Studios, a spin on 93.7 WSTW’s Hometown Heroes Radio Show, a featured performance at a future Philly Rising Event, and a write-up in That Mag Music Magazine. If you’re a local musician looking to get noticed, or if you just want to enjoy a night of live performances, food, and drinks, this event is for you. Not able to come to the monthly jam session? World Cafe Live also has weekly Monday Jazz Jam.
To relax your mind and take care of your body for the rest of your busy week, check out pay-as-you-go yoga on the Schuylkill Banks from 7-8 a.m. and 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays. Classes are taught by yoga experts and all skill levels and ages are encouraged to join in on the fun. Participants should bring their own yoga mat, towel and water, and classes are weather permitting. There is no price for admission, but donations are appreciated!
The East Passyunk neighborhood of Philly celebrates summer with special shopping, dining and happy hour events on every Wednesday night of the season called Passyunk Passeggiata. This weekly event pays tribute to the neighborhood’s Italian roots by hosting a traditional Passeggiata, or evening walk through town. The events will feature unique shops and vendors, live music performances, delicious alfresco dining and happy hour specials, and on certain weeks, farmers’ markets and art exhibits. These festivals have something everyone can enjoy, so don’t miss out on the celebration of summer in a traditional Italian neighborhood.
Beautiful summer nights mean alfresco movie screenings for all to enjoy, even in an urban setting. Starting at dusk nearly every Thursday of the summer, guests of all ages can come out to the Schuylkill Banks for a free viewing of a different popular film every week on a huge screen. Along with the flicks, guests can get a free snack, a free drink, and a free raffle. Picnics are encouraged as well.
What better way to kick off your weekends in the summer than happy hour at a scenic outdoor beer garden? For those 21+, Visit Philly is hosting a beer garden series every Friday of the summer at different outdoor spots all over the city. Now in its second season, these pop-up beer gardens will run from 5 to 8 p.m. and include specials on food and local craft beer, as well as giveaways and social ops from the Visit Philly team. The happy hours will be held at spaces all over the city, including The Oval and Spruce Street Harbor Park.
Philly’s newest outdoor paradise The Oval will host a slew of different events this summer, including Quizzo competitions on Saturdays until the end of August. In partnership with Johnny Goodtimes, guests can create teams to join in on the friendly competition for a night of Quizzo in the tree-canopied beer garden. Along with a fun night of games and beer, guests can choose from a wide variety of delicious rotating food trucks that will be at the beer garden throughout the summer.
All of these events and more are available for your enjoyment this summer, but the season’s almost over! Don’t forget to check out these fun activities all over the city and soak in the last few weeks of sun and warm weather!
