Outdoor_Summer_Series

Whether you’re acquainted with the cats of the jazz scene—or you’re just acquainted with the cat in your apartment—this summer is the time to experience all the musical facets Philly has to offer. Check out some of the best spots for jazz, soul, and funk music below and enjoy adding a little “swing” into your summer days.

If you’re looking for a casual introduction to the jazz scene, World Cafe Live is your go-to hook up.

Every Monday Night from 5:30-7 p.m., World Cafe Live hosts “Jazz Jams.” Huge perk? The shows are FREE! After the house band begins the night with two short performances, any musician or vocalist is welcome to take the stage with the band—just be sure to sign-up beforehand if you’re interested in performing. If getting on stage isn’t your thing, sit back with some food from the cafe and enjoy the show.

#CampusTip: Jazz Jams are hosted upstairs, so be sure to walk to the top level of the cafe once you arrive at the event.

If you’re looking for exposure to a blend of styles, visit Chris’ Jazz Cafe.

In its little cafe, Chris’ hosts a wide range of performances each week. From student-run bands to well-known artists, listeners at Chris’ receive full exposure to the many faces of the jazz scene. With its intimate setting, listeners can get up close and personal to the stage and experience the sounds that appeal to their tastes—whether that be the rhythmic sound of the drum or the rich sound of the tenor saxophone—Chris’ has got you covered.

#CampusTip: Students receive a $5 table credit when purchasing a ticket online—just remember to bring a valid I.D. to the show.

If you’re looking for live music and fine dining head over to Heritage in Northern Liberties.

In its homey abode, Heritage offers its guests great dining options accompanied by the sounds of funky jazz. Each day of the week, this restaurant hosts bands, trios, solo artists and special guests for listeners. Check out Heritage’s “Bluegrass Brunch Sundays” from 11:30-3p.m. for an added perk, and see if you vibe well with the sounds of Bluegrass.

#CampusTip: Since Heritage is one of the newer spots for jazz, be sure to make a reservation on the site to save yourself a table—and avoid a long wait!

#GetThere: 914 N. 2nd St., Philadelphia, PA, 19123

If you’re looking for the happiest of “happy hours,” check out Time.

This whiskey bar and tap room is the perfect environment to experience jazz, funk, and soul artists. Throughout the month, Time hosts multitudes of artists, ensuring that listeners gain a full musical experience each time they come to the restaurant. Enjoy American cuisine alongside live music every night, including the sounds of jazz musicians, DJs, funk groups and even Open Mic nights.

#CampusTip: Time’s “Happy Hour,” from 5 – 7 p.m., offers some seriously discounted deals, including $5 BBQ Pork Sliders, $3 seasonal drafts and $5 house red and white wines.
