Bacon Prize for his career spent developing properties which engage local communities with their neighbors and neighborhoods through culture and art. Gates, a Chicago-based artist and founder of the Rebuild Foundation, has spearheaded the creation of nearly a dozen community and culture centers, each with a specific focus – from African American cinema to small, community-based creative manufacturing companies.
Also honored at this ceremony will be the winners of the 2017 Better Philadelphia Challenge. This year’s urban design challenge asked students to develop plans to transform the abandoned City Branch rail tunnel under Pennsylvania Avenue into a recreational trail and cultural destination.
