Celebrate the Craftiest of Months at CraftNOW Philadelphia

Did you know November is CraftMONTH in Philadelphia? Now you do! And what better way to celebrate the craftiest of months by exploring the art of the handmade with eight events, a dozen exhibitions and hundreds of artists!

CraftNOW Philadelphia is back for a third year to spotlight the vibrant craft art movement in Philadelphia. This two-week event series takes place at galleries, museums, and universities throughout the city from November 1 to 12. Mark your calendar for these lectures, hands-on activities and special events for 2017:

1. CraftNOW Kickoff, Proclamation, and Artist Reception
When: Wednesday, November 1, 5 PM to 8 PM
Where: The Art Gallery in City Hall, Room 116, Broad & Market Streets
How much: FREE

CraftMONTH begins on Wednesday, November 1 at City Hall with a reception for Crafting Contexts, a juried exhibition of 27 artists from the Philadelphia region whose works explore the intersections of traditional craft and fine art. The reception follows a ceremonial event proclaiming November as CraftMONTH in Philadelphia.

2. A Well-Crafted First Friday in Old City
When: Friday, November 3, 5 PM to 8 PM
Where: Galleries, Retailers and Restaurants throughout Old City
How much: FREE

Stroll through galleries and boutiques in Old City during November’s First Friday festivities. Pick up a CraftNOW brochure and present it to participating retailers and restaurants to receive special discounts for this one night only.

3. Philadelphia Museum of Art Contemporary Craft Show
When: Thursday, November 9 through Sunday, November 12
Where: Pennsylvania Convention Center, Hall F, 12
th & Arch Streets
How much: Present a current college ID at the information desk outside of Hall F and get a discounted $12 ticket at the door. Get Tickets

The 41st annual Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show celebrates 195 artists from across the United States and 25 guest artists from Korea. Hear artists describe firsthand how they create works in fiber, glass, metal, wood, and clay.

4. Fluid Boundaries Symposium
When: Friday, November 10, 12 PM to 8 PM
Where: Moore College of Art & Design, Graham Auditorium, 20
th & the Parkway
How much: FREE

This free half day of talks and moderated discussions at the Moore College of Art & Design, surrounds the theme “Fluid Boundaries.” A highlight is the keynote from Abraham Thomas, the Fleur and Charles Bresler Curator-in-Charge for the Renwick Gallery at The Smithsonian American Art Museum, in his first speaking engagement in Philadelphia. 5. CraftNOW Create
When: Saturday, November 11, 11 AM to 4 PM
Where: The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, 300 South Broad Street
How much: FREE

Craft steps out of the studio and into the heart of Philadelphia with a hands-on exploration of craft at the Kimmel Center. Try your hand at woodworking with The Center for Art in Wood and the Wharton Esherick Museum, create your own Claymation with The Clay Studio, make and take metal jewelry with the Wayne Art Center, go on a glass blowing studio tour with The University of the Arts, and much more.
