Masonic Temple in Philadelphia

August 17, 2022 by Ashley Barber

The Masonic Temple in Philadelphia was constructed in 1873. It is considered one of the great “wonders” of the Masonic world. Resplendent with artwork, frescos, stained glass, murals and sculpture, it is a visual treasurer that connects both Masons and non-Masons alike to an inspirational world of art, architecture and history. In addition, there is also an exhibit hall, featuring a wide assortment of treasures from Philadelphia’s, America’s and Freemasonry’s past.

Please note, this venue does not have a self-guided tour. Hour-long tours are available Saturday at 10AM, 11AM, 1PM, 2PM and 3PM. There are no tours after 3 p.m.

Don’t have a full hour for the tour? You can browse the impressive exhibit hall to see a part of their extensive collection of Masonic artifacts, at your leisure any time between 10AM and 4PM.

As a gateway between the College and the city of Philadelphia, The Galleries are a catalyst for creative exploration, experimentation and scholarship and function as a gathering place to meet, reflect, learn, challenge, and create—our commitment to academic, artistic, and curatorial freedoms is evidenced through our inclusive and innovative exhibitions and events, all of which are free and open to the public.

What to see during CollegeFest: Visit Rochelle Levy: By the Sea, an exhibition that explores the prolific work of alum Rochelle F. Levy ’79. Known for her depictions of equestrian tableaus, peaceful seaside moments, and beaches populated with an ever-changing ensemble cast of characters, Levy has been painting picturesque scenes from her life and travels for more than fifty years.

Share Food Program: Help Out on Nice Roots Farm

September 1, 2021 by Marissa

Share Food Program distributes food to 1,000,000 neighbors in need each month, over 50% of whom are children, and 12% of whom are seniors or people with disabilities. The Nice Roots Farm is where we grow fresh fruits and vegetables that we distribute to farmers’ markets across the region, and the proceeds from those sales support our operations. Breah Banks manages the Nice Roots Farm, and her expertise and passion keep it running smoothly, year ’round. But she doesn’t do it alone.

Sign up to volunteer on Saturday, September 11 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.!

What’s the opportunity?
Activities may include planting, mulching, watering, weeding, raking or harvesting. Sometimes we need help with routine cleaning and maintenance around the farm as well.

Whom is my volunteer work helping?
The produce from Nice Roots Farm is sold at extremely discounted cost at local farmers’ markets, and to seniors through the Farmers Market Nutrition Program. In addition to distributing fresh produce, we use the farm as an opportunity to teach local school students about urban agriculture.

What are the requirements?

  • Volunteers may be required to lift bags of mulch or use tools. We recommend that volunteers be able to lift at least 20lbs.
  • This activity takes place outdoors, so volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes and bring water, sunscreen and bug spray.

Old First UCC Saturday Breakfast & Cupboard Ministry

August 23, 2021 by Marissa

Each Saturday morning, 52 weeks a year, the Old First United Church of Christ serves a hot breakfast, and provides clothing and toiletries to 50-80 people (mostly men). The Old First UCC clothing cupboard functions as a “free store,” offering as much dignity and choice as possible given the availability of donations from week to week.

Clothing volunteers are responsible for breakfast distribution, sorting, and assisting our guests with finding a new outfit and picking toiletries. Volunteer opportunities are available from 8 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 11. Sign up here!
