In a world that traditionally offers a choice between the typical “teaching college” and the “research university,” Haverford offers a third way. A Haverford education takes the best of both, offering students an intimate yet limitless experience that takes full advantage of the inextricable link between teaching and research, and it is distinguished by the degree of emphasis on true collaboration in the pursuit and creation of knowledge.
Haverford confers B.A. and B.S. degrees in Anthropology; Archaeology*; Art History*; Astronomy; Biology; Chemistry; Classics; Comparative Literature; Computer Science; East Asian Studies (including Chinese and Japanese); Economics; English; Fine Arts; French; Geology*; German; Growth & Structure of Cities*; History; Italian; Linguistics; Mathematics; Music; Philosophy; Physics; Political Science; Psychology; Religion; Romance Languages*; Russian; Sociology; and Spanish. Other courses of study include 3-2 Engineering; African & Africana Studies; Arabic; Biochemistry & Biophysics; Chinese; Creative Writing; Dance*; Education & Educational Studies; Environmental Studies; Film Studies; Gender & Sexuality Studies; Hebrew & Judaic Studies*, International Economic Relations; Japanese; Latin American & Iberian Studies; Mathematical Economics; Neural & Behavioral Sciences; Peace, Justice & Human Rights; Pre-Business; Pre-Law; Pre-Medicine; and Theater Studies*. Haverford College boasts some of the finest athletic facilities in all of NCAA Division III, including the Douglas B. Gardner ’83 Integrated Athletic Center; the Alumni Field House, which holds a batting cage, a 200-meter indoor track and basketball, tennis and volleyball courts; the Johnson Outdoor Track; Swan Field, which has a synthetic FieldTurf surface; the Roy Randall Diamond for baseball and Class of ’95 Diamond for softball; the Andy Kates Fencing Salle; top-notch squash courts and outdoor tennis courts; and one of the best cricket pitches in the United States.
With more than 150 extracurricular clubs and organizations on campus, Haverford students can choose from a broad range of activities. The consortium with Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore gives Haverford all of the extracurricular resources of a large institution, while preserving the accessibility to these events and organizations that can only be enjoyed at a small college. Students can attend events on all three campuses. Student organizations range from cultural, political and religious groups to organizations that offer students opportunities to pursue their interests in journalism and writing, instrumental and vocal music, art, athletics and community service.
We invite you to visit campus to take a tour, have an interview, visit a class, eat in the dining center and even spend the night. The Office of Admission is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. during the summer). In the fall, the office is open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. We usually offer four tours a day (9:30 a.m., 11:45 a.m., 1:45 p.m. and 3:45 p.m.) when school is in session and during most of the summer. We recommend that you visit our website or call our office a day or two before your visit to confirm tour times. No appointment is necessary, but we do encourage you to arrive at least five minutes before the tour in order to sign-in and to chat informally with one of our student hosts. On-campus interviews are strongly encouraged, if possible, especially for students who live within 150 miles of the campus. You may interview as early as March of your junior year and as late as January 5th of your senior year. Overnight visits are available during your senior year on Monday through Thursday evenings when school is in session. Please see our website for instructions on requesting an interview or overnight visit. If you wish to meet with an athletic coach during your visit, you should contact the coach directly (see www.haverford.edu/athletics/directory.php).
