Free Museum Day: Penn Museum
July 3 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pmFree
A “must see” destination in Philadelphia, the Penn Museum invites visitors to discover the mysteries of ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, China & Japan, and the Middle East to unlock the wonder of the human story – and explore their own place within the arc of human history. Special exhibitions include Moundbuilders: Ancient Architects of North America; Native American Voices; Bearing Witness: Four Days in West Kingston; and Ancient Egypt: From Discovery to Display, which gives visitors the chance to walk in the shoes of an archaeologist with an insider’s look into where artifacts come from and how they are conserved.
The Penn Museum, with a collection of more than one million objects from across the globe, is a cultural gem housed in an eclectic building that showcases mixed architectural elements, surrounded by outdoor gardens that provide a peaceful urban oasis. All year long, the Penn Museum offers a wide variety of public programs that cater to various ages and interests – from CultureFest! cultural celebrations; Summer Nights, a pop-up happy hour like no other in the city; public tours that are included with admission; a 15-minute “Daily Dig” that provides a “deep dive” into one object in the collections every day at 1:00 p.m.; and family Second Saturday activities; to “rent parties” inspired by the Harlem Renaissance; intimate conversations with Museum curators and keepers over coffee in the Pepper Mill Cafe; as well as early morning strolls through history (for FREE!) with the Museum Mile.
