Sittin’ In: Live Sessions

Sittin’ In introduces audiences to new cutting-edge artists. It defies genre, often drawing from everything from straight-ahead jazz to freestyle hip hop and all points in between. There’s an unpredictability to the night, which we enthusiastically embrace! Sometimes you’ll experience a finely tuned set and sometimes you can catch a totally improvised show by seven people who have never played together. The awesome creativity, excitement, and quality always shine through in The Kimmel Center’s informal club-like setting, featuring early warm-up sets by some of the hottest DJs around. And, it’s free!

Sonido del Corazon

Outside Sound is partnering with Taller Puertorriqueño, a dynamic arts and culture organization in North Philadelphia, for a seven-week music writing and production residency. Guest teaching artists will be collaborating with Taller Puertorriqueño participants – young students from North Philadelphia’s Puerto Rican and Latino communities – to create new music and mixed media works. These works, which will blend writing, performance, dance/choreography, and visual arts, will speak to their experiences, insights, and ideals. The finished product will be performed and put on display at the Kimmel Center’s SEI Innovation Studio.

Immanuel Wilkins with Rog Walker & David Dempewolf Residency Public Workshop

The public workshop is a special kind of concert where the jazz residency artists engage in a direct dialogue with the audience about their music. The artist shares background info, research, and musical inspirations for the new work they are writing for the residency as they discuss what “jazz” is today. They will play some of their own music and cover some music the audience is sure to know already. It’s a special BYOB event and tickets are free with a reservation!

Immanuel Wilkins is exploring, through music and visual arts, how Philadelphia has shaped the cultural foundation of his identity. Through combining Wilkins’ musical influences in jazz, gospel, and R&B with field recordings and visual arts, audiences can expect an immersive experience and a fresh take on what the next generation of jazz in Philadelphia looks and sounds like.

Jazz has a long history as a catalyst for social change. Ruth Naomi Floyd (Vocalist & Composer) and Charles “Chaz” Lattimore Howard (Poet & Lyricist) continue in that tradition as their jazz residency project holds a mirror to the issue of homelessness in Philadelphia. Through music, lyric, and spoken word, the pair, along with their collaborators, are asking questions, opening a dialogue, and creating a body of work that allows these individuals to truly be seen.

An Inside Look into Chestnut Hill’s Witches and Wizards Festival

On October 20, I spent the day at the Witches and Wizards Festival (formerly Harry Potter Festival) in Chestnut Hill. Missed out on this year’s event? Check out Campus Philly’s inside look in our blog post, and be sure to add the Witches and Wizards Festival to your calendar next year, because this is one event you do not want to miss!
